Conscience is the evidence of the necessary, and the formal centre is the contingent linked to the necessary. Conscience is the presence of the necessary in the contingent. Speaking in intentional tenns, we say that the contingent element becomes illuminated through acts of understanding. Freud equated conscience with a harsh punishing god. This castigating god made himself felt brutally in the personality because a reprehensible act had been committed. This was the view of conscience canonized in Western thinking by St.
Quoted in Jones, 1972, p. ' Once these mechanistic principles were in place, it was then a logical step to deny the existence of God. Whether that occurred or not was in fad irrelevant, because the deistic God was an ontological spoof. The determinist view of the universe is the handicapped child of a spurious Judeo-Christian ontology. It is possible that an intentional view could prevail with a Judeo-Christian ontology but not with a spurious one; but even correctly formulated contingent existence remains divorced from necessary existence because the notion of godhood in this ontology is essentially separate from it.

I believe that much psychological theorizing has gone wrong because the central aim of human endeavour has been thought to be either the drive for survival or the pursuit of happiness, and that if you take either of these two to be the human goal, then it is not possible to explain many of the weird paradoxes that confront us once we begin to study human beings in any depth. The instincts that ensure our survival are a necessary given.
