I have used the interviews largely as checks on my interpretive readings of written material. Almost all the arguments in this book are based on sources (books, magazines, library holdings of pamphlets, and so on) in the public domain. Only in the chapter on neighborhood associations (chapter 4) do I extensively cite interviews; this is because published scholarly studies on the subject are few, and hence interviews must serve as one of the primary sources of data.
