SCREENING THE CASE Prosecutors have a great deal of discretion in deciding what to charge, and the law may permit the prosecutor to choose from several different possible charges.

If the suspect has been charged with a crime, he or she has a right to have an attorney present. The suspect’s attorney will be permitted to observe you as you examine the lineup participants. The police detective should first explain the procedures involved in the lineup, and keep you out of sight of the offender. The officer will ask you if you recognize any of the individuals, and, if so, how you know them. Take your time in looking at the lineup, and if you can identify the offender, do so clearly.

If you have no luck in finding a program, there may nonetheless be an informal group that meets. Ask your local police officer or prosecutor for assistance in finding such a group.
