Five stages of a using career As I have indicated earlier it is useful to think of treatment in terms of a using career. For convenience, I have separated this into five stages.

Early in my thinking I was interested in the work of Luigi Zoja (1989) who looked etymologically at the word “addict” and saw it rooted in the relationship between the slave and his master in Latin.
